No matter how hard I tried and how hard I ran, I wasn't fast enough. I don't remember exactly what happened, but after I felt a crack on the back of my head and heard that loud ringing I knew my luck had run out. I had learned the hard way Sullivan's Fleet was not the group to fuck with.

When I came to it was broad daylight and the thug was still hitting my as hard as he could. A mixture of stomps and hits with his old baseball bat. After that damn head injury, I was lucky enough to not feel these hits as bad as I thought I would. He shouted obsenities at me, and asked questions, but I could barely hear him and had no intention on answering. Most of his bat strikes were to my shoulder and torso. His kicks hit my head. He wasn't out to kill me, at least not yet.

I blacked out after awhile. My hope was that by the time I came to he'd be gone and would have taken anything I had on me and left. I also worried about the young mother that took me in last night. Was she alright?

When I finally came to the guy beating me down was talking to a group of travelers. He was telling them to leave. They had seem adamant to go past. Were they trying to help? I used this distraction as a good moment to try and get to my feet. Maybe escape if I could.

The group had a really hostile way of handling this situation. The two guys looked to be itching for a fight while the girl used a strategy of talking to distract and confuse my attacker. I could see my attacker getting frustrated as he walked back to me. I was crawling toward a tree stump to get myself up, but before he had a chance to hit me again his focus was back on this new group. He had his baseball bat ready to fight.

While my attacker was distracted I decided to take my chance and I grabbed his foot and tripped him to the ground. I could tell it hurt. He dropped his baseball bat and it rolled from his hand. I remember hoping this group could fight, because whether they wanted to or not, they were involved.

Lucky for me they were pretty useful. One of them had a jacket lined with various bladed weapons and knives. The other had a crow bar. My heroes. They had my back and attacked as soon as they could. The large one with the knives jammed a blade on each side of his kidneys. My attacker cried out in pain. The large man smirked and laughed. They were enjoying hurting this guy. The youngest looking guy of this threesome walked up to the guard being a total smart ass. I could barely make out what he was saying when they approached me. I had taken rest against that tree stump.

“Thanks” I said.

“Hey, no problem.” the young one said. I began to try and get to my feet when he called out “Hey, where you going?”

“I'm going to get my stuff from the place I stayed last night.”

“Stuff? What kind of stuff.”

“None of your business.”

“Oh, I really do think it is my concern. We just saved your life.” He then pointed to the girl in the group. “And Bindi here could be a great help in patching you up.”

“All I've got is a pistol and some medical supplies. I was trying to get away.”

“Well, we three are looking for a way into Milwaukee.”

“I'm trying to get out of Milwaukee. I'm not well liked.”

“Well, it stands to reason that you've got something we want. You help us into Milwaukee and we'll be even steven.”

“Ugh.”

“Deal?”

Reluctantly we shaked on the deal. I wasn't happy, but I did owe them. “Fine” I said. “I'll get you in. I'll take you to my boat.”

“Boat??” he said. “You have a boat? Now I really want to go.”

Bindi then leans in to him and said “You don't even know what a boat is.”

“I don't care!” he said. “It sounds great! We're definitely going now!”

So, that's how I came to be with this ragtag group. I eventually learned their names were Marvis (the younger, cockier one), Bindi (the female) and Brad (the large one with the knives) and they had come from Racine with the hopes of establishing a new community in Milwaukee. At first I had thought their idea was a fool's errand, but as I got to know them I saw their passion, saw their zeal and saw that they were genuine. I had gotten wrapped up in this group and their cause.
